In addition to France, Italy and Spain, which are the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, you may want to spend some time exploring the neighboring countries. In the UK, for example, you could spend a few days in London, take a day trip to Stonehenge, the Cotswolds, and see some of the most impressive castles, such as Dover and Leeds. A stop in the beautiful Lake District is well worth it. Trips to the UK can easily be combined with a second destination. A short flight to Amsterdam, Holland will bring you to a peaceful city, a bit on the intimate side with interesting museums, beautiful canals and unique architecture. Belgium, located just south of it, is a multi-cultural country with three official languages, friendly, open-minded people and the famous 'Beer Route'. A few days in Brussels and Bruges make for a great addition to your trip.
Switzerland deserves its own separate trip, and depending on your interests you can explore the stunning Swiss Alps in Zermatt, St. Moritz and Jungfraujoch, or immerse yourself in the local culture in Lucerne, Zürich and the towns along Lake Geneva, such as Montreux, Lausanne and Geneva.
If you are vacationing in Spain, you may consider a side trip to Portugal or Morocco. We recommend a stop in Lisbon, which is full of character and color, and Sintra, the breathtakingly beautiful 14th century World Heritage Site. From southern Spain a quick ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar gets you to Tangier, the gateway to Africa. From there you can continue to the fascinating city of Casablanca and magical Marrakesh.
If you are looking for an adventure to Eastern Europe, Romania should be on your travel list. There you can explore mystical Transylvania with its medieval castles and fortified towns, the wooden churches of Maramures, the majestic Carpathian Mountains and the diverse eco-system of the Danube Delta. Lastly, you can enjoy a beach trip in Greece or Croatia by spending some vacation time on one of the stunning islands on the Mediterranean, such as Santorini and Crete, or on the Adriatic Sea on Hvar or Brac. Not to be missed is the rich cultural heritage of the region. In Athens you can see the wonderful Acropolis with its many monuments atop its rocky base, including the Parthenon, the Propylaea and the Temple of Athena Nike. In Delphi explore the Temple of Apollo, where the famous oracle of Apollo spoke, or you can take a day trip to Epidaurus and Mycenae.
