Canal du Midi Cruise Trip
A classic Holiday in South of France
Day 1 – Trèbes
Private transfer from Narbonne train station to a luxurious barge. Upon arrival enjoy a glass of champagne and meet the captain. Dinner on board.
Day 2 – From Trèbes to Puichéric
Today explore Carcassonne, the fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Site dating back to the Gallo-Roman era and the best preserved medieval fortified city in France. Admire the fortifications with its 52 watchtowers and portcullis that survived many attacks and resisted many armies. In the afternoon, cruise along the 330 year old Canal du Midi to Puichéric lock. Dinner on board.
Day 3 – From Puichéric to Jouarres
Pass through the trademark locks of Canal du Midi as the changing landscape requires them to be more numerous and deeper. This is a great opportunity to walk or cycle from one lock to the next as the barge cruises on, navigating the triple locking system. In the afternoon, enjoy a wine tour and tasting at a local château winery located in one of the prestigious A.O.C. regions of France. During the tour learn about the long-standing and continuing wine trade in Languedoc and sample a selection of wines. Dinner on board.
Day 4 – From Jouarres to Roubia
In the morning, visit a Benedictine Abbey dating back to the 8th century. Situated in Lagrasse, one of the most beautiful villages in France and home to many artisans, the restored Abbey was once one of the most prosperous of its kind thanks to Charlemagne’s charter. At around lunch time, sample some local dishes in a spectacular setting overlooking the Corbières, then return to the boat for the afternoon cruise to Roubia passing under plane trees and by a "l'épanchoir" bridge, designed by Pierre Riquet specifically for Canal du Midi. Dinner on board.
Day 5 – From Roubia Le Somail
In the first part of the day, cruise through vineyards and pine forests to the charming village of Le Somail, built for the Canal du Midi. This lively village is located on the "grand bief", another engineering prowess unique to the Canal. Enjoy some free time to explore the old bookstore, then head to a local olive oil mill where you will have the chance to sample the famous Lucques olives. Continue to Minerve, the ancient capital of the Minervois, which boasts a 12th century Cathar fort surrounded by deep limestone gorges. Dinner on board.
Day 6 – From Le Somail to Sallèles d'Aude
This morning’s excursion is to Narbonne, a former Roman Mediterranean capital where the Visigoth monarchs once lived. Visit the Archbishop's Palace and the indoor market, where you will have plenty of time to shop or simply absorb the vibrant atmosphere. In the afternoon, cruise along the delightful Robine Canal, built after the Canal du Midi to link Narbonne to the Mediterranean. Optionally, you can cycle ahead and explore the village of Sallèles d’Aude, the final destination. Farewell dinner on board.
