Christmas in Spain
7-day winter holiday special to Barcelona and madrid
Day 1 – Arrival in Barcelona
Private transfer from Barcelona airport to your downtown hotel. Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure; start exploring the streets of Barcelona on your own. Christianity is a big part of every day life in Spain and Christmas is one of the most important holidays.
Day 2 – Highlights of Barcelona
Join your private guide as you explore the beautiful city of Barcelona and get familiarized with its general layout. Listen to interesting anecdotes that only your local expert can provide. This tour will take you to the beautiful sights of the city including La Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, Passeig de Gracia, the Olympic Ring and much more and includes an English speaking guide, as well as pick up and drop off at your hotel.
Day 3 – Fira de Santa Lucia Christmas Market
Enjoy a day at leisure in Barcelona and soak up the magical Christmas atmosphere. We suggest a stroll through the Christmas market of Santa Lucia in front of the Barcelona Cathedral. Mingle with the locals as they come to buy their Christmas trees, and check out the stands selling gifts, mistletoes, decorations and hand-made products. This is the perfect place to buy your very own Caga Tio, a small wooden toy in the form of a log that is a typical symbol of Christmas in Catalonia. Later, you can visit one of the peculiar museums Barcelona has to offer, such as Gaudi’s nautical Casa Batllò, Museo de Xocolata (don’t forget to sneak a treat on your way out!), or the wonderful Picasso Museum. Explore the Born neighborhood, an area with more of a local feel and a multitude of small restaurants. Stroll Montjuic hill with its palaces and gardens, and observe the whole city from up above.
Day 4 – Travel to Madrid
Private transfer from your accommodation to Barcelona airport. Board your non-stop flight to Madrid. Upon arrival, a driver will pick you up and take you to your hotel in the city center.
In the evening, we recommend a ride on board the Navibus (Navidad means Christmas in Spanish), the special bus that lets you enjoy the unique Christmas lights of the cathedral. This is such a big deal that each year the setting of the lights is actually prepared by famous designers. A couple of ice skating rinks are set up in the city, if that’s an activity you’d like to try. Shopping malls are open late, and the most Christmassy ones are definitely El Corte Ingles and Cortylandia.
Day 5 – Christmas walking tour in Madrid
Your guide this morning will take you to see the Royal Palace and talk to you about the Hapsburgs and the Royal family. Given the time of the year, you will see the Christmas market on Plaza Mayor. Madrid is full of nativity scenes, often taking place in the streets with actors. It is very likely that you will see one. Wander through Madrid’s historic quarters while listening to fascinating anecdotes from your knowledgeable guide. Note that the monuments are not entered on this tour and will be seen from the outside only.
Day 6 – Toledo and Windmills of Castilla La Mancha
Today set off on a full day tour of beautiful Toledo located just 46 miles from Madrid. Called the 'City of Three Cultures' Toledo used to be home to Christians, Jews and Moors during the Middle Ages. It was a city of great diversity where cathedrals stood next to mosques and synagogues, and artists, such as the great painter El Greco, lived alongside kings and queens. Before you get to Toledo, stop at the scenic viewpoint for photographs and to admire the panoramic skyline of city. Once in town, explore the winding cobblestone streets and landmarks with an expert guide. See the Cathedral and other places of worship, walk along the fortified walls and gates and by the Alcazar. Today the Alcazar is an Army Museum, which you can visit for an extra fee. Lunch at a local restaurant.
In the afternoon drive through Castilla la Mancha to the historic windmills that used to grind the grain cultivated in the area. These windmills became a landmark of the region when the writer Cervantes told the story of Don Quixote and the giants he was bravely going to fight. Your driver will take you to the existing windmills and you'll have the chance to explore the site and visit one of them from the inside. Return to Madrid at the end of the day.
