Christmas in Italy
6-day winter holiday special to rome
Day 1 – Arrival in Rome
Private transfer from Rome airport to your downtown hotel. Enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure; start exploring the streets of Rome on your own. What better place to be at Christmas than the heart of Christianity? Whether you are or not religious, Christmas is a wonderful tradition that is contagiously joyful!
Day 2 – Christmas walking tour
Our walking tour through the Eternal City will not only cover all the essentials of Rome such as the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain or the Spanish steps, but will also put on a special Christmas twist to allow you to discover the magic that takes place this time of year. An especially fun place is the Christmas market on Piazza Navona, taking a life of its own with carolers, a merry-go-round, little stands selling everything from Christmas sweets to toys, nativity figures and all sorts of gifts, and of course the one and only, Santa Claus, locally known as Babbo Natale. If you are lucky enough, you will get to witness the wonderful display of the nativity scene on the square. Speaking of nativity scenes, Rome isn’t short of them and pretty much every church will have one, but Santa Maria Maggiore is probably the most popular one. On this tour, you will hear about all the traditions and superstitions that make Christmas in Italy completely unique, including the tale of the mysterious Christmas Witch.
Day 3 – Vatican and Sistine Chapel
Today the Papal Palace will open its doors for you to discover the innumerable treasures it withholds. From the Greek statues of the Lacoon to the magnificent Raphael Rooms, your guide will walk you through the highlights of the Vatican Museums, and make them come to life with stories and anecdotes. Enter the Sistine Chapel to discover Michelangelo's masterpiece and one of the greatest and most famous frescoes in history. The culmination point will be St Peter’s Basilica, the most iconic Catholic church in the world. At this time of the year, St Peter’s Square is decorated with an enormous Christmas tree and a beautiful nativity scene.
Day 4 – Catacombs of Rome
December can be a little chilly even in Rome. On days like these, the catacombs are a warm and cozy place to be. On your tour learn about the secret places where the Christians used to hide and practice their once forbidden faith. Dig through thousands of years of fascinating history and explore the Capuchin Crypts with its 4000 skulls on display. Creepy for some, captivating for others, the visit of the catacombs is sure to stir up emotions.
Day 5 – Colosseum and Villa Borghese
The Colosseum is undeniably the most famous ancient monument in Rome. Our tour guides don’t just give you a history lesson, they will make you live Ancient Rome: imagine the Curia come to life and the senators having heated discussions, the horse drawn carriages racing on the Circus Maximus and the gladiators fighting in the arena. See the excavations of the Roman Forum, the government buildings and temples, the altar where Julius Caesar was cremated, the underground prison where Saint Peter and Saint Paul were kept, and most of all the Colosseum itself. Once inside, get a close look at this triumph of ancient engineering.
In the afternoon, visit the Borghese Gallery which is home to one of the most interesting collections of paintings by Renaissance masters such as Bernini, Caravaggio and Titian. The villa is set in the midst of a beautiful park, which can also be visited.
